Work Experience

University of Exeter

Research Software Engineer

  • AI for air traffic control (ATC): Creating world-first digital twin of UK airspace with the National Air Traffic Service. Assessing the role of AI in ATC operations & decision support, & in airspace redesign.
  • Developing data pipelines & airspace simulation libraries in Python, alongside engineering & research teams. These accurate, efficient, data-driven simulations allow replay & AI control of thousands of UK aircraft/day.
  • Lead developer for the React/TS front end. These visualisers & control panels allow human interaction with the back end through REST APIs. Battle tested in the first live human – AI ATC shadow trials.
  • Currently building interactive explainable AI tools with D3, allowing re-assessment of objectives during trials.
  • Proposed & migrated to new developer tooling on front & back end, improving code standards & reliability.
  • Designed & built gamified UI for public to try ATC, shown at UK conferences, incl. Farnborough Airshow.
  • Climate adaptation tool: Sole developer of deployed web app, designed with UK Council stakeholders. The tool links geographical boundaries, NetCDF-based climate forecasts & climate adaptation research.
  • Managed successful alpha deployment with Ansible & AWS, working with DevOps and infrastructure teams.
  • Engineered new React/Express features, enabling further usage by clients when drafting local council policy.
  • Redesigned NetCDF/PostgeSQL data pipeline to improve climate database build times by more than 90%.
  • Coding courses: Created & published a variety of programming courses for university staff, on Python, Machine Learning, Data Analysis, Unix & others. Delivered these courses to +100 staff members so far.
  • App deployment: Docker-ised & deployed FORTRAN/Flask teaching tool, with AWS & CloudFormation.
  • Image segmentation: Developed pre-processing and segmentation pipeline for microscopic images of bacteria.

Research Fellow in Mathematics

  • Conducted qualitative interviews on themes of open/transparent research, publishing 8 case studies on OSF.

Strategic Review Limited

Data Scientist (startup)

  • Developed core data science & patient flow simulation capabilities whilst embedded in a local health-tech startup. Wrote discrete event & visualisation libraries in Python for modelling NHS clinic environments.
  • Collected patient data on-site at NHS hospitals, before extracting, processing & analysing. Designed new KPIs & visualisations to assess clinic operational efficiency, presenting findings to clients from Merck & Bayer UK.
  • Created new visualisations & metrics to assess geospatial data quality, to monitor data collection performance.
  • Supervised 7 MSc Data/Computer Science students from two UK universities over two years.

Dyson Ltd.

Design Engineer

  • Research/design of product concepts, using computational, manufacturing & electronic prototyping methods.
  • Dyson ZoneTM: developed microelectronics & code for wearable purification test rigs, with Arduino/C++.
  • Designed spectroscopy test rigs to distinguish between tissue types, using curve fitting methods in MATLAB.

University of Southampton

Computational Researcher & Robotics Teaching Assistant

  • Developed pipelines & workflows to simulate structural deformation & flow characteristics of coronary stents.
  • Taught & provided programming & prototyping for 2nd year microelectronics module, 250+ students/week.
